Professor Dr. Manickam Ravichandran

Last night’s Urban Vision session delivered an inspiring and highly informative exploration of how precision medicine is moving from research to real-world clinical application.

Prof. Dr. Manickam began with an engaging story of Ötzi the Iceman—a 5,300-year-old mummy whose fully sequenced genome revealed his health risks, diet, and even ancient infections. This archaeological example set the stage for how genomic sequencing can transform healthcare for the living.

From there, he guided the audience through:

  • The essence of precision medicine – tailoring prevention, diagnosis, and treatment to each individual’s genetic blueprint because “one size does not fit all.”

  • Pharmacogenomics in action – adjusting drug types and dosages based on genetic metabolism differences, especially in cancer care, to improve outcomes and reduce side effects.

  • Real-life patient cases – from alleviating severe neuralgia with genome-informed pain management to preventing adverse drug reactions and improving child development through genetic insights.

  • Technology drivers – advances in DNA sequencing, CRISPR gene editing, and AI-powered neuroprocessing units that cut genome analysis times from weeks to hours.

He also highlighted the human operating system analogy: each of our ~36 trillion cells holds a 3-billion-letter DNA manual, with genes expressed only when needed. Understanding and interpreting this “manual” opens new possibilities for preventive healthcare, regenerative medicine, and more targeted therapies.

Key Takeaways:

  • Precision medicine bridges science and clinical practice through education, awareness, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

  • AI and next-gen sequencing are making same-day genomic reporting a reality.

  • Local ISO- and cGMP-certified facilities at ALPS enable high-quality, PDPA-compliant genomic and cell therapy services.

Urban Vision remains committed to creating a platform where cutting-edge science meets actionable clinical innovation—transforming healthcare one genome at a time.
